Nearly thirteen years ago, we started publishing Rolling Thunder, an anarchist journal of dangerous living covering social movements, direct action, and creative experiments in autonomy around the world. Between 2005 and 2015, Rolling Thunder chronicled everything from the Danish squatting movement, immigrant labor in Canadian factory farms, and the origins of Nietzsche’s theory of the eternal return in 19th century French insurrectionism to anarchist participation in the Ferguson uprising and the defense of Kobanê. Whether you wanted to find an anarchist analysis of sex work or hour-by-hour maps documenting the street clashes during a global summit, Rolling Thunder was the ideal resource. You can download issues 1-7, 9, and 10 for free from our archives; issues 8, 11, and 12 are still available for purchase. Here, we explain why we are concluding the project, what the options are for subscribers, and what comes next.

Several factors have contributed to our decision to stop publishing Rolling Thunder. The demands of responding to constant crises over the past couple years have played a part, as have shakeups in our collective. We’re busier now than ever before—but most of that energy is going into online publishing and preparing our next books. The biggest factor is financial: in order to keep Rolling Thunder affordable, we intentionally set the price well below the break-even point. That means we have lost money on every issue. More than a decade into the project, that eventually began to add up. We have never focused our energy on fundraising, so we need to conclude Rolling Thunder and figure out a better plan.
If you are a subscriber, we can offer you three options:
-
If you do nothing, we will accept your balance as a donation to CrimethInc. and use it to fund other projects.
-
Send an email to rtsubs@crimethinc.com and ask for the balance of your subscription to be turned into credit on our online store.
-
If you’d like an actual refund, we can send it via PayPal. Email rtsubs@crimethinc.com requesting a refund and providing a PayPal email address to which we can send the funds.
We would still like to produce high-quality print versions of all the material that we are publishing online. However, to make a print periodical like Rolling Thunder financially feasible, we would have to raise thousands of dollars up front for each issue. If you can assist us with this, please contact us.
This decision doesn’t indicate that our commitment to this work has diminished one bit. We will use any resources that we can get our hands on to continue doing what we do. We have a lot of plans for the future and our most ambitious work is still ahead of us. Thanks for all your support, trust, and patience over the years.
