In January 2026, with the backing of the Turkish government and the blessing of the United States and European governments, the Syrian military surrounded the self-governing communities of Rojava, seeking to forcibly integrate them into the Syrian state.
This is not the first time that the revolutionary experiment in Rojava has confronted these same forces.
